Kurt J.G. Schmailzl studied social sciences, physics, medicine and art history in Munich and Berlin. He completed the first three studies and received his doctorate in sociology and medicine. He first worked on the border area of medicine, physics and technology at E. S. Bücherl in Berlin on the project Artificial Heart. His medical dissertation deals with the question of whether an artificial heart control is necessary and how it is possible today. At the same time, he submitted a diploma thesis on French structuralism in sociology and subsequently received his doctorate in social medicine.
As an author, he worked with painters who illustrated his texts. He is regarded as a prominent figure in the geographical and cultural demolition of East and West after the fall of the Iron Curtain and works in an NGO advisory board for the EU on health policy issues.
In 2006 he was appointed honorary professor at the University of Rostock. In 2008 he was appointed Professor of International Health Management at the University of Management and Communication (FH) and Dean of the new Faculty of Health in Potsdam. From 2012-2013 he was founding dean of the Faculty of Health at the Medical School Berlin (MSB).
Since 2014 he has been appointed for Medical Sociology and Health Care Research at the new Medical University Brandenburg (MHB) “Theodor Fontane”, since 01.10.2018 as Senior Professor, with a focus on Gender Medicine, Digital Care, Digital Ethics, Artificial Intelligence and Healthcare Equity.
